L'âge d'or (English)

...A French film produced in 1930. Along with Un Chien Andalou (1929), this is considered a groundbreaking avant-garde film made jointly by Dali and Bunuel, and although Dali's name is in the credits, it is actually a Bunuel film without Dali. It is one of the earliest talkies in France. It was later praised as "the most innovative film for the ears" (Eluard) for its preview of Belle de Jour (1967), which Bunuel shot later, based on a novel by J. Kessel and starring Catherine Deneuve, with the sound of bells of love and sensuality connecting unrelated scenes, the first use of an inner voice (monologue) in film history, and the cries of love between a man and a woman that pierce the screen.

...This performance, together with the sequel "1793" in 1972, attracted an audience of 650,000. In 1975, the group created a parody play "The Golden Age" that took advantage of the improvisational nature of commedia dell'arte, with Arlecchino as the protagonist, to depict the conflict between modern immigrant workers and capitalists. The unique spatial structure of the stage, with the audience seating sloping in a mortar shape, once again became popular. In 1976, the group produced its first four-hour epic film, "Molière." After that, the founding members left the group over disputes over how the company should be run, but in 1981 they performed Shakespeare's "Richard II," "Twelfth Night," and "Henry IV" in succession, incorporating techniques from oriental theater, and have continued to be active since then.

…この上演は，72年の続編劇《1793年》とあわせて65万人の観客を動員した。75年には現代の移民労働者と資本家の対立を，アルレッキーノを主人公とするコメディア･デラルテの即興性を生かした集団創作によるパロディ劇《黄金時代L’âge d’or》に仕立てあげ，すり鉢形に傾斜した客席が舞台を囲む特殊な空間構造が再び評判となった。76年には初めて4時間に及ぶ大作映画《モリエール》を製作，その後劇団の運営方法をめぐって創立メンバーが脱退したりしたが，81年には東洋演劇の手法をとり入れたシェークスピアの《リチャード2世》《十二夜》《ヘンリー4世》を連続上演，以後も再び活発な活動を続けている。…
