Ogawa Tazaemon Book - Ogawa Tazaemon Book

...In 1658 (Manji 1), a book of Noh plays entitled Shimaitsuke Hyakuban Shichidayu-ryu (commonly known as Shichidayu Shimaitsuke) was published, which contained katatsuki (formal patterns), sakurimono (diagrams of plays), ai (insertion lines), mabyoshi (interval rhythms), etc., but there is no other book that contains the substance of a Noh script. Detailed Noh books were published, such as the Yamamoto Chobeihon of 1659, which provided explanations and commentaries on the verses in the form of headnotes; the Rokutokuhon of the Konparu school (1681), which was the first published work to specify tsuyo (strong) and yowa (weak) recitation; and the Ogawa Tazaemonhon of the Kanze school of 1691 (Genroku 4), which was the first to include detailed naoshi (symbols indicating the details of the melody) and also noted differences in the text from the Konparu school, costumes, and the names of the composers. The format of the Noh book was almost complete during the Genroku period (1688-1704), and has been passed down to the present day, with strict revisions of the text. In addition to the common songs (around 200 numbers) of the time, many extra songs were also transcribed or published, and many different collections of songs and dances that were compilations of parts of Noh songs and small songs were also published.
