A city in the northern part of the Ishikari Plain in central Hokkaido. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It is served by the Hakodate Main Line and the Do-o Expressway. In Toyonuma in the south, there is a thermal power plant, a large chemical fertilizer factory, and factories for explosives, construction, woodworking, etc. Agriculture is also thriving, producing rice, beans, potatoes, onions, etc. The city attracts tourists, mainly due to the Highway Oasis and Oasis Hall, which opened in 1993, and Hokkaido Children's Land.
