...During repeated somatic cell division, the diploid nucleus undergoes unequal distribution or loss of chromosomes, resulting in haploidization and reverting to haploid cells. This type of life cycle is called a parasexual cycle. Sexual differentiation is induced by changes in environmental factors; in Chlamydomonas, gamete formation is induced by removing the nitrogen source from the culture medium, and in Spirogyra, gamete formation is induced by raising the pH of the medium.
