Uonuma Line - Uonuma

...A city located almost in the center of Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Its population was 42,494 (1995). It is a commercial and industrial city with the Shinano River midstream and its tributary, the Uono River, as its hinterland. Ojiya Station on the Joetsu Line is located on the east bank of the Shinano River, and the city has developed on the Shinano River terraces. In the early modern period, it was a post town on the Ueda Ginzan Kaido road and a riverside town for boat traffic on the Shinano River. Since the early modern period, it has been a specialty of Echigo Jofu and Ojiya Chijimi, but production has declined, and in 1976 it was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property and the techniques are being preserved. Currently, Tsumuki is the main type of weaving. The Joetsu Line runs through the city, and there is the Ojiya Interchange on the Kan'etsu Expressway. ...

…新潟県のほぼ中央にある市。1954年市制。人口4万2494(1995)。信濃川中流域と支流魚野川流域を後背地とする谷口商工業都市で，上越線小千谷駅は信濃川東岸に位置し，市街は信濃川段丘面に発達している。近世には上田銀山街道の宿場町，信濃川舟運の河岸場町であった。近世より越後上布，小千谷縮を特産したが生産が減じ，1976年重要無形文化財に選定され技術は保存されている。現在織物はつむぎが主体である。上越線が通じ，関越自動車道小千谷インターチェンジがある。…
