Pinion

...Instead of having teeth on the cylindrical surface, an internal gear has teeth on the inner surface of the cylinder (Figure 6-b). A spur gear with an infinite diameter is called a rack (Figure 6-c), and by combining it with a small gear (called a pinion in this case), it can convert between linear motion and rotary motion. In addition, since an involute curve becomes a straight line when the diameter is infinite, the rack tooth profile of an involute gear is a straight line tooth profile.
