Located in Aburahi, Koka-cho, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, on the western foot of Mt. Aburahi. The deity enshrined is Aburahi-no-kami, who is not found in the Kojiki or Nihonshoki, nor is the place name Aburahi found anywhere else in the country, and is a deity that has only been worshipped in this area. Mizuhanome-no-mikoto and Sarutahiko-no-mikoto are enshrined in the adjacent shrine. As it is close to Kinai and Mt. Aburahi is worshipped as a sacred mountain, the date of its founding is thought to be quite early, but is unknown. According to the Sandai Jitsuroku, it was granted the rank of Jugo-no-ge in 877 (Gangyo 1). Former prefectural shrine. The annual festivals are the Aburahi Festival on May 1st and the Aburahi Festival held at the top of Mt. Aburahi on September 13th, and are crowded with many people, including oil and fat workers from all over the country. The Yakkoburi dance, which takes place once every five years during the Aburahi Festival, is a prefectural intangible folk cultural asset, while the irregularly performed Taiko Dances (Oodori and Koodori) are nationally designated intangible folk cultural assets. The main hall was built in the Muromachi period, and is a national important cultural asset along with the worship hall, tower gate, and corridor. The Koga History and Folklore Museum is located within the grounds.
