[Distribution and ecology]
About 2000 species in 50 genera, including the bromeliad genus Ananas , are distributed mainly in the tropical regions of Central and South America, as far south as North America, with only one species, Pitcairnia feliciana , found in western Africa. Although their roots are poorly developed, they have well-developed water storage tanks and absorbing hairs on the leaf surface that are well adapted to an epiphytic lifestyle, and many species live an epiphytic life on trees and can grow on rocky ground with poorly developed soil.
