Mitsumaru Tsujimoto

Organic chemist. Born in Tokyo. After graduating from the First High School, he graduated from the Department of Applied Chemistry at Tokyo Imperial University in 1901 (Meiji 34). In the same year, he joined the Tokyo Industrial Research Institute, where he devoted his life to the study of fats and oils. He is considered the father of fat and oil chemistry in Japan. He published 172 research papers both in Japan and abroad, and all but one of them were about fats and oils. His famous discovery of squalene C 30 H 50 (1916) is noteworthy as the first discovery of a hydrocarbon in the animal kingdom. He received a doctorate in engineering in 1915 (Taisho 4) and the Imperial Prize in 1920. He discovered 13 species, including sardine acid. Among his wide-ranging hobbies, his most notable interest was mountain climbing, and he was one of the founders of the Japan Alpine Club. Among the 59 species of plants he collected from Mount Ho-o in the Southern Alps, some were unknown to the academic world, including one species of Campanulaceae that he named Ho-o-shajin. He also studied the oils from the seeds of alpine plants.
