Specific impulse

Japanese: 比推力 - ひすいりょく（英語表記）specific impulse

A value that serves as a guideline for the performance of rocket propellants. It is the thrust generated when 1 kg of propellant is consumed in 1 second, and is measured in seconds. It is the reciprocal of the specific propellant consumption. The higher the specific impulse value, the better the performance of the propellant. The first stage of the Saturn V rocket that launched the Apollo spacecraft had a specific impulse of about 270 seconds for the liquid oxygen/kerosene, the second and third stages had a specific impulse of about 350 seconds for the liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen, and the liquid fluorine/liquid hydrogen had a specific impulse of about 365 seconds.
