Russian geologist and geographer. After graduating from the St. Petersburg Mining University, he served as professor at Tomsk Polytechnic University and Moscow Mining University. A full member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (now the Russian Academy of Sciences), he served as secretary of the Geology and Geography Section of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and director of the Cryogeology Institute. He participated in academic surveys in the Karakum Desert, Mongolia, Baikal, and other areas, and classified sandy land relief into four types. He is the author of many books, including The Geology of Siberia, three volumes (1935-1938). He has also written science fiction novels.
