Obruchev (English notation) Владимир Афанасьевич Обручев／Vladimir Afanas'evich Obruchev

Russian geologist and geographer. After graduating from the St. Petersburg Mining University, he served as professor at Tomsk Polytechnic University and Moscow Mining University. A full member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (now the Russian Academy of Sciences), he served as secretary of the Geology and Geography Section of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and director of the Cryogeology Institute. He participated in academic surveys in the Karakum Desert, Mongolia, Baikal, and other areas, and classified sandy land relief into four types. He is the author of many books, including The Geology of Siberia, three volumes (1935-1938). He has also written science fiction novels.

ロシアの地質・地理学者。ペテルブルグ鉱山大学を卒業して、トムスク工科大学、モスクワ鉱山大学の教授を歴任する。ソビエト科学アカデミー（現、ロシア科学アカデミー）正会員で同会議の地質学・地理学部門書記や凍土学研究所長を務めた。カラクム砂漠、モンゴル、バイカルなどの学術調査に参加し、砂地起伏を4型式に区分した。『シベリアの地質』全3巻（1935～1938）など多数の著書がある。SF小説も著作している。
