A nationwide civil war that took place from 1180 (Jisho 4) when the Minamoto clan in various provinces rose up in arms following an imperial decree from Emperor Mochihito, to the annihilation of the Taira clan at Dannoura in Nagato Province (Shimonoseki City) in March 1185 (Bunji 1), mainly in the form of a decisive battle between the Minamoto and Taira clans. It is called this after the era name of the time, and is also simply called the Jisho War, or the Genpei War (war). [Prologue to the Civil War] Already in the mid-12th century, conflicts between provincial governors and deputies and local samurai were intensifying throughout the country, sometimes leading to rebellions by the latter.
