Jisho-Juei Civil War

Japanese: 治承･寿永の内乱 - じしょうじゅえいのないらん

A nationwide civil war that took place from 1180 (Jisho 4) when the Minamoto clan in various provinces rose up in arms following an imperial decree from Emperor Mochihito, to the annihilation of the Taira clan at Dannoura in Nagato Province (Shimonoseki City) in March 1185 (Bunji 1), mainly in the form of a decisive battle between the Minamoto and Taira clans. It is called this after the era name of the time, and is also simply called the Jisho War, or the Genpei War (war).

Already in the mid-12th century, conflicts between provincial governors and deputies and local samurai were intensifying throughout the country, sometimes leading to rebellions by the latter.

1180年(治承4)以仁王（もちひとおう）の令旨（りようじ）を受けた諸国源氏の挙兵から，85年(文治1)3月長門国壇ノ浦(下関市)に平氏一門が壊滅するまで，主として源平両氏による決戦のかたちをとって進行した全国的規模の内乱。当時の年号を冠してこう呼び，たんに治承の乱，あるいは源平の合戦(争乱)とも称する。
