Brigade - Eiso

Japanese: 営倉 - えいそう
Brigade - Eiso

The types of punishment and facilities of the Japanese Army, as determined by the Army Disciplinary Order enacted in 1872 (Meiji 5). Brigade punishment was an administrative measure based on the discretion of individual platoon commanders, in which soldiers who violated their military duties, such as disobeying orders, abandoning their duties, losing weapons, deserting, or engaging in private fighting, were detained in individual rooms. The number of days of imprisonment was between one and 30 days. There were two types of brigade: heavy and light. In heavy brigade, soldiers were not provided with bedding, and only rice, salt, and hot water were provided for two out of three days. Both heavy and light brigade facilities were prohibited from lying down during the day. Brigade facilities were small rooms with bars and locks, mainly located behind the guardhouse within the unit, and were closely monitored. The Japanese Navy did not have brigade, but instead had imprisonment rooms and detention houses.
