Takachiho Gorge

This gorge flows through Takachiho Town, Nishiusuki County, in the upper reaches of the Gokase River in northern Miyazaki Prefecture. Takachiho Town is a mountain plateau formed by thick deposits of welded tuff from Mount Aso in the northwest, but the Gokase River has deeply eroded this plateau, creating a gorge about 100 meters deep. Red columnar joints can be seen at the bottom of the eroded tuff cliffs. A spring layer is found halfway up the cliff, which becomes Manainotaki Falls and hangs over the gorge. This spring water is also used for rainbow trout farming. The riverbed is made of welded tuff, and potholes can be seen everywhere. The scenery is particularly beautiful when the new green leaves are in bloom and when the leaves change color in autumn. A nature trail runs through the main part of the gorge, and there are also plenty of facilities such as a campsite and boat rentals. It belongs to the Sobokatamuki Quasi-National Park and is designated as a national place of scenic beauty and natural monument.

宮崎県北部、五ヶ瀬川(ごかせがわ)の上流部、西臼杵(にしうすき)郡高千穂町を流れる峡谷。高千穂町は、北西部に位置する阿蘇(あそ)山の溶結凝灰岩が厚く堆積(たいせき)して山間の台地を形成しているが、五ヶ瀬川はこの台地を深く侵食して、約100メートルの深さの峡谷をなす。侵食した凝灰岩の絶壁下部は赤色の柱状節理がみられる。絶壁途中に湧水(ゆうすい)層があり、これが真名井滝(まないのたき)となって峡谷にかかる。この湧水はニジマス養殖にも利用される。河床は溶結凝灰岩からなり、随所に甌穴(おうけつ)がみられる。とくに新緑、紅葉時の景観に優れる。峡谷の主要部は自然遊歩道がつけられており、キャンプ場、貸ボートなど施設も充実している。祖母傾国定公園(そぼかたむきこくていこうえん)に属し、国の名勝・天然記念物指定。
