Oniku - Meat

A perennial plant of the Orobanchaceae family (APG classification: Orobanchaceae). Also known as kimuratake. In Japan, it parasitizes the roots of the Miyama alder. The stem is 15-30 cm tall, dark brown and thick, with dense yellowish brown scale leaves. In July and August, spikes form on the upper half of the stem and dark red-purple lip-shaped flowers bloom. It grows in forests in the subalpine and alpine zones of Honshu, north of the Chubu region, and Hokkaido, and is distributed from northern Asia to North America. The name comes from the use of the name for Cistanche salsa (CAMey) Beck, which is found in northwestern China. Kimuratake means golden essence mushroom, and the dried whole plant is called Japanese nikunikuyo, and has been prized as a tonic and aphrodisiac since ancient times.

The calyx of the Onyx genus is cup-shaped, fused, and irregularly divided into five lobes. There is only one species in one genus. It parasitizes plants of the Alnus genus.

ハマウツボ科（APG分類：ハマウツボ科）の多年草。別名キムラタケ。日本ではミヤマハンノキの根に寄生する。茎は高さ15～30センチメートル、暗褐色で太く、黄褐色の鱗片葉(りんぺんよう)が密生する。7～8月、茎の上半部に穂状をなし、暗紅紫色の唇形花を開く。中部地方以北の本州、北海道の亜高山帯から高山帯の林内に生え、アジア北部から北アメリカに分布する。名は、中国西北部産の肉蓯蓉(にくじゅうよう)Cistanche salsa (C.A.Mey) Beckにあてて用いたことによる。キムラタケは金精茸(たけ)の意味で、全草を乾燥したものを和肉蓯蓉と称し、古くから強壮、強精薬として珍重された。

　オニク属は萼(がく)が杯状で合着し、不規則に5裂する。1属1種である。ハンノキ属の植物に寄生する。
