Essex (Kingdom) - Essex

...the Anglo-Saxons who came to England and settled there between the 5th and 9th centuries formed small tribal kingdoms. The seven kingdoms were Kent in the southeast (founded by the Jutes), Essex, which occupied the lower reaches of the Thames, Wessex, which developed in the west, Sussex in the south (all founded by the Saxons), East Anglia in the east, Mercia in the middle, and Northumbria in the north (all founded by the Angles). These kingdoms fought against the indigenous Britons and continued their conquests, but they also fought among themselves for supremacy, and by the end of the 6th century, Kent under the rule of King Æthelbelft (Ethelbert) (reigned 560-616) had become powerful.
