A samurai family in southern Kyushu. In 1335 (Kenmu 2), the son of the Shimazu clan's fourth head, Tadamune, who was the guardian of Satsuma, Osumi and Hyuga, Tokihisa was given the position of land steward of Niinoin in Hyuga Province (currently near Takanabe Town, Koyu County, Miyazaki Prefecture), and took the name of the land from which he held the domain as his surname. At that time, the fifth Shimazu clan, Sadahisa, was newly embarking on the management of Hyuga, and he placed his brothers in Hyuga, establishing branch families including the Niino clan, the Kitago clan and the Kabayama clan. However, Niinoin was soon taken by the Hyuga general Hatakeyama Tadaaki, and the Niino clan made Shibushi Matsuo Castle their residence from around 1557 (Shohei 12, Enbun 2) until 1538 (Tenbun 7).
