Abridged version of the Eighteen Histories (English: Shi-ba shi-lüe; Shih-pa shih-lüeh)

A popular Chinese history book. Written by Zeng Xianzhi of the Yuan Dynasty. 2 volumes. Since then, it has been frequently expanded and supplemented, with a phonetic commentary by Chen Yin of the Ming Dynasty and titles by Liu Yan, resulting in the current version being 7 volumes. It contains important facts excerpted from 17 official histories including the Records of the Grand Historian and the History of the Five Dynasties, as well as Song history, and is intended as a beginner's reader. It is a popular book with little historical value, but it is interesting because it gives an overview of the rise and fall of Chinese dynasties, and includes brief biographies of many people, historical events, and wise sayings. It was circulated in Korea and was introduced to Japan in the Muromachi period. It was widely read in the Edo period, and was adopted as a textbook for elementary schools nationwide in the Meiji period, and many commentaries were published.

中国の通俗史書。元の曾先之の著。2巻。以来しばしば加筆増補され，明の陳殷が音釈を，劉えんが標題を付した現行本は7巻。『史記』以下『五代史』までの 17の正史と，宋史の資料から重要な事実を抜粋，初学の読本としたもの。史料的価値は低く通俗本であるが，中国王朝興亡の概略がわかり，多くの人物の略伝，故事，金言も含み興味深いため，朝鮮に流伝し，日本にも室町時代に渡来。江戸時代に盛んに読まれ，明治時代には全国小学校の教科書に採用され，多数の注釈書が出た。
