1803‐69 Russian novelist, philosopher, and music critic. Cousin of the Decembrist poet Aleksandr Ivanovich Odoevskii (1802-39). Early on he was influenced by German philosophy, especially by Schelling, and served as president of the romantic philosophical circle, the Atheist Society. He produced many works, including the satirical novel The Duke's Daughter Mimi (1834) and the utopian novel 4338 (unfinished), but his most famous work, Russian Nights (1844), is a combination of short stories about Sebastian Bach and Beethoven's Last Quartet, as well as philosophical dialogues, and is considered the first Russian philosophical novel.
