Two nuns - Ninbinbikuni

A kana-zoshi written by Suzuki Shozo. Published in 1660 (Manji 3). The wife of Suda Yahee, who was killed in battle, meets a beautiful widow near the battlefield, and while they are mourning her husband together, the woman dies of an illness. When she asks the villagers to bury him, the body is left in the field, and when she visits on the seventh day after the death, her body is swollen and stinking. On the second and seventh days, her flesh breaks and she becomes prey to birds and animals, eventually turning into a skeleton. Seeing this, she realizes the truth of impermanence, becomes a nun, practices asceticism, and passes away in this story, which is a work of Buddhist enlightenment that shows influences such as Su Dongpo's "Kusoushi" and Ikkyu's "Ikkyu Skeleton."

鈴木正三(しょうぞう)作の仮名草子。1660年（万治3）刊。戦死した須田弥兵衛(やへえ)の妻は、その戦場近くで美貌(びぼう)の未亡人と出会い、ともに夫を弔ううちに、その女が病死する。里人に埋葬を依頼したところ、遺骸(いがい)は野に放置されていたために、初七日に訪れると、五体は膨れただれて異臭を放っていた。二(ふた)七日には肉が破れ鳥獣の餌食(えじき)となり、やがて白骨になってしまう。このありさまに無常の理を悟り、尼となって修行のすえ往生した、という筋(すじ)で、蘇東坡(そとうば)の『九相詩(くそうし)』や一休の『一休骸骨』などの影響がみられる仏教的啓蒙(けいもう)文芸である。
