Its official name is the National Railroad Passenger Service Corporation. It is the operator of passenger trains connecting major cities throughout the United States. It receives subsidies from the federal government. It was established in 1970 by a decision of the federal Congress in response to the serious deficit of private railroads. It significantly reduced the passenger transportation network and consolidated services to limit them to areas with large populations and large cities. Amtrak pays the railroad companies in each region for train operation costs and covers the cost of track and station facilities. Amtrak also manages all administrative expenses such as train schedules, route setting, and ticket sales. Amtrak receives revenue from ticket sales and mail delivery, but needs subsidies from the federal government to cover its operating costs.
