The oldest known Transylvanian state was the Indo-European Dacian state, whose capital was Sarmizegetusa, whose ruins still stand to this day. The Romans, interested in Transylvania's mineral wealth, conquered it under the reign of Emperor Trajan (106) and made it a province of Dacia until 271, when Emperor Aurelian ordered the withdrawal of the Roman troops.
