Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown A painter representing the Soga school during the Muromachi period. He was also called "Dasoku." There are many points about him that are unclear. The sliding door paintings at Shinjuan, a subtemple of Daitokuji Temple (c. 1491), which is famous as the oldest surviving sliding door paintings in a Zen temple, are said to have been painted by Soga Jasoku, and research on Jasoku has been centered on the authorship of this sliding door painting. The most likely theory is that it was Fusen Sojo, the son of Bokukei, who is thought to be the founder of the Soga school, but there is no definitive proof. However, it is certain that several works bearing the "red fly" seal, such as "Sansui-zu" (owned by the Gunma Prefectural Museum of Modern Art), were painted by the same artist as the Shinjuan paintings, due to the close affinities of style. There is also a theory that "Jasoku" was a hereditary pen name for a painter of the Soga school, but this cannot be found in contemporary historical materials, and no conclusion has been reached. <References> "Complete Collection of Shohekiga" 8 volumes, "Complete Collection of Japanese Art Paintings" 3 volumes (Yuji Yamashita) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
