German-born American Jewish art historian. Born in Hanover. Studied in Berlin, Munich, and other institutions, and taught at the universities of Hamburg, Munich, and New York. During his time in Hamburg, he met A. Warburg, and contributed to the formation of the Warburg School by cooperating with Warburg's library activities. One of his students was E. Windt. In 1935, he was invited to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he carried out a wide range of research activities. He established the methodology of iconology, and made a great contribution to the interpretation of images in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. His major works include Studies in Iconology (1939), Albrecht Dürer (1943), and Early Netherlandish Painting (1953).

ドイツ出身，米国のユダヤ系美術史家。ハノーファー生れ。ベルリン，ミュンヘンなどに学び，ハンブルク，ミュンヘン，ニューヨークの各大学で教えた。ハンブルク時代にA.ワールブルクと出会い，その文庫の活動に協力してワールブルク学派の形成に寄与した。弟子にE.ウィントがいる。1935年プリンストン高等研究所に迎えられ，以後ここで多彩な研究活動を展開した。イコノロジーの方法論を確立，中世，ルネサンスにおける図像解釈に多大の業績を残した。主著に《イコノロジー研究》（1939年），《アルブレヒト・デューラー》（1943年），《初期ネーデルラント絵画》（1953年）などがある。
