The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter

A representative full-length novel by American author N. Hawthorne. Published in 1850. The story revolves around the seven-year psychological conflict of four people: Hester Prynne, who commits adultery; her jealous husband Dr. Chillingworth; her partner in adultery, Reverend Dimmesdale, who is tormented by his guilt and finally confesses to the world; and her illegitimate child Pearl. The initial A embroidered in scarlet thread on Hester's chest initially stood for adultery, but gradually came to mean ability, angel, and so on. Making full use of such symbolic techniques, the novel explores the evil lurking deep within the human heart, while also featuring real people such as Governor Bellingham in supporting roles, and is highly regarded as a historical novel that accurately depicts Boston Puritan society in the 1640s. The contrast between the strict morality of Puritan society and Hester's desire for love and freedom of thought is nothing but a reflection of the author's inner contradictions.
