...the Puteaux School (so named because Billon's studio was in Puteaux, a suburb west of Paris) was centered around Gaston Duchamp, whose real name was Gaston Duchamp. The former logically explored and deepened the aesthetic possibilities of this style, but was uninterested in mass demonstrations, whereas it was the latter that led the development of Cubism as a movement and won many sympathizers both at home and abroad. The Puteaux School began with a large-scale mass exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants in 1911, and continued to hold wave-like demonstrations. In particular, the Section d'or (Golden Section) exhibition in 1912 was attended by most painters and sculptors who sympathized with this plastic trend, except for Picasso and Braque, the founders of the movement. The main exhibitors were the Billon brothers (J. Billon, sculptor Raymond Duchamp-Villon (1876-1918), and Marcel Duchamp), Albert Gleizes (1881-1953), Jean Metzinger (1883-1957), Picabia, Roger de La Fresnay (1885-1925), Léger, Laurencin, and Louis Marcoussis (1878-1941). *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Section d'or" are listed below.
