Educational Kanji - Kyoiku Kanji

Japanese: 教育漢字 - きょういくかんじ

This refers to kanji that are deemed necessary to teach students to read and write during compulsory education. Based on the report of the National Language Council in 1947, it was promulgated by Cabinet order in February of the following year, 1948. Of the 1,850 "standard kanji," 881 were selected as educational kanji, but in 1968, 115 more were added, making the total 996. The elementary school curriculum guidelines of 1977 state that it is necessary to read and write roughly 1,000 kanji, including the 996, while the junior high school curriculum guidelines require students to read and become familiar with about 1,000 new standard kanji over a three-year period, and for high school students, to be able to read and write all the on-kun table of standard kanji by the time they graduate. The total number of kanji indicated by grade level in the latest elementary school curriculum guidelines announced in 1989 is 1,006, which are the current specific educational kanji.

義務教育の期間に，読み書きともにできるように指導することが必要であると認められた漢字をいう。 1947年の国語審議会の答申に基づき，翌 48年2月内閣の訓令で公布された。「当用漢字」 1850字のなかから，881字が教育漢字として選ばれていたが，68年に 115字ふやし，計 996字とした。 77年の小学校の学習指導要領では 996字を含めて 1000字ぐらいの漢字を読み，その大体を書くことが必要であるとし，中学校学習指導要領では3年間で 1000字程度の新出当用漢字が読めて使い慣れること，高等学校では卒業までに当用漢字のすべての音訓表が読めて書けることを求めている。 89年に告示された最新の小学校学習指導要領に学年別に示された漢字の総数は 1006字であり，これが現在の具体的な教育漢字ということになる。
