A mountainous region in southeastern Australia. It mainly refers to the Snowy Mountains, centered on the country's highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko (2,228 m), in southeastern New South Wales, and the area of Kosciuszko National Park, but also includes Mount Bogong (1,986 m) and Mount Feathertop (1,922 m) in northeastern Victoria. Flower fields and glacial landforms can be seen in the highlands above the tree line (1,800 m). Covered in snow for three to six months in winter, it is known as a ski resort. The annual precipitation is extremely high for the country (more than 3,000 mm), and it is the headwaters of the Malay River system, which flows west, and the Snowy River, which flows east. However, most of the water flows out to the east, so many dams, reservoirs, and water transfer tunnels have been built as part of the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Development Project, and the water of the Snowy River is diverted into the Malay River system for use in power generation and irrigation.
