1822‐93 A physiologist from the Netherlands. Professor at Leiden University. In Japanese-language documents before World War II, he is often referred to as Molleschot. After working in Germany, he served as professor at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, the University of Turin in Italy, and the University of Rome. He is one of the leading proponents of so-called vulgar materialism. His works include "Physiology of Metabolism in Plants and Animals" (1851), "Circulation of Life" (1852), and "Studies on the Natural History of Man and Animals" (1857).
