Also known as burping, or colloquially as burping. This is the phenomenon in which gas in the stomach (usually air) refluxes out of the body through the mouth. When swallowing, a small amount of air enters the stomach, and when not in a recumbent position, it mainly accumulates in the fundus of the stomach (this is called a stomach bubble). Normally, intragastric pressure is about 10 mmHg higher than intraesophageal pressure, but because the lower esophageal sphincter contracts to tightly close the esophageal outlet, no reflux from the stomach to the esophagus occurs. As food is ingested and the stomach becomes full, intragastric pressure rises, but at the same time, the contraction of the sphincter also becomes stronger, so no reflux occurs.
