A city of heavy chemical industry in the northern Moravia region of the Czech Republic. It is located where the Odra River flows out of the mountains into the plains. It has a population of 319,293 (2001). It is the center of the Ostrava-Karvina coalfield and the major center of the Czech coal and metallurgical industries. Ferrometallurgy (Bitkovicky Metallurgical Combinat, Kuncicky Metallurgical Combinat), coke chemistry, heavy machinery industry, etc. are developed. Coal was discovered in the late 18th century, and large-scale development began in the late 19th century. It is a key railway location, and is connected to Poland in the east, Slovakia through the Jablunkowski Pass in the southeast, and Moravia and Bohemia through the lowlands between the mountains called the Moravian Gate in the south and southwest. It is home to the Technical College of Mechanics and Mining. As the city developed, the city area expanded, and the residential area of ​​Borba was formed on the western border, and the commuter town of Garjov grew.
