...From the end of the 13th century onwards, many so-called "ancient sagas" were written, but these were more entertainment-oriented sagas dealing with legendary heroes from before the founding of Iceland. Well-known literary figures include Snorri Sturluson and his nephew Sturla Thórðarson (1214-84), authors of the prose poetics introductory book "Edda" and the Norwegian kings' saga "Heimskringla". Although the extent to which medieval literary works have survived varies from work to work, they have been passed down to later generations as the only spiritual heritage of a nation that suffered under long-term foreign rule, and saga literature in particular contributed to giving a historical and realist tendency to Icelandic literature, which was revived in the late 19th century. ...
