Sanseido started out as a secondhand bookstore in 1881, when it was founded by Tadakazu Kamei. After publishing "Webster's New Dictionary: Japanese Translations" in 1888, the company focused on publishing dictionaries, planning and publishing Japan's first comprehensive encyclopedia, the "Japanese Encyclopedia," but stopped and went bankrupt. In 1915, the printing and publishing divisions were incorporated, and the separated sales division was renamed "Sanseido Bookstore" and restarted. "Japanese Encyclopedia" was completed in 1919. Sanseido currently publishes a wide range of books, mainly educational books, including various dictionaries with the title "Concise," "New Meikai Japanese Dictionary," "Daijirin," textbooks, and reference books. In 2003, the company had capital of 70 million yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending August 2003 were 8.1 billion yen. Sales breakdown (%): dictionaries 50%, textbooks 35%, other 15%.

1881年亀井忠一が創業した古本屋が初め。1888年《ウヱブスター氏新刊大辞書和訳字彙》発行後は辞典出版に力を注ぎ，日本最初の総合百科事典《日本百科大辞典》を企画，刊行しはじめるが，途絶，倒産した。1915年印刷，出版部門はそれぞれ株式会社となり，分離した販売部門は〈三省堂書店〉となって，再出発。《日本百科大辞典》は1919年に完結した。三省堂は現在，〈コンサイス〉と冠した各種辞典，《新明解国語辞典》《大辞林》のほか教科書・参考書など広く教育関係図書を中心に出版している。2003年資本金7000万円，2003年８月期売上高81億円。売上構成（％）は，辞書50，教科書35，その他15。
