Apart from ancient magical devices that used thermal expansion, it is said that G. Galileo was the first to devise a device that showed changes in temperature. In the early 17th century, he created something similar to what we call a gas thermometer today, but because it was affected by fluctuations in atmospheric pressure, it was not considered a true thermometer and was called a thermoscope (meaning temperature detector). Thermometers with a structure in which a liquid is sealed inside a glass tube were put to practical use in Italy and other countries in the mid-17th century and spread throughout Europe.
