...And so, Pudovkin and Eisenstein created and fostered "film as a socialist art." Together with director and film theorist LV Kuleshov (1899-1970), Pudovkin and Eisenstein theorized the techniques and methods of American films, including those of D.W. Griffith and Chaplin, in a "dialectical materialist" way, proposing the theory of montage. Silent films such as Battleship Potemkin (1925) directed by Eisenstein and The Mother (1926) directed by Pudovkin were made, which were landmarks in the history of silent cinema. Eisenstein's film October (1928), which commemorated the 10th anniversary of the revolution, and Pudovkin's Asian Storm (1928) followed, as well as Eisenstein's The Whole Line (Old and New) (1929), which promoted socialist construction, and The Good Earth (1930), a film about agricultural collectivization directed by Ukrainian director A.P. Dovzhenko (1894-1956).
