A theater located in Dotonbori, Osaka. Successor to the Kadomaru Theater, it was called the Asahi-za from 1882 and hosted young kabuki and shinpa performances. In 1909, Shochiku used this theater to expand into Osaka. It later became a movie theater, and burned down in 1945. In January 1956, it was rebuilt as the Bunraku-za on the site of the Benten-za. In 1963, Shochiku gave up Bunraku, and in August of the same year it was renamed the Asahi-za and relaunched as a commercial theater, but in February 1984, it closed after its final joint kabuki and bunraku performance.
