The prickly pear species was introduced to Europe in the 16th century. In Japan, the first record was the Haoju (Tounatsu) which appeared in Kaibara Ekiken's Wajiga (1688), and is thought to be the Oogatahouken (large sword) Opuntia maxima Mill. (illustration). All species except the prickly pear were introduced after the Tenpo era (1830-44).

　ヨーロッパへは，16世紀にウチワサボテンの仲間が渡来した。日本では貝原益軒の《和爾雅（わじが）》(1688)に出てくる覇王樹（はおうじゆ）(トウナツ)が最初の記録で，ウチワサボテンのオオガタホウケン(大型宝剣)Opuntia maxima Mill.(イラスト)と思われる。ウチワサボテン以外は天保(1830‐44)以降に渡来した。…
