One of the marginal seas of the Arctic Ocean. It is surrounded by the northern coast of the Scandinavian Peninsula, northwestern Russia, Novaya Zemlya, Franz Josef Land, and Svalbard (Norwegian territory), and has a large inlet called the White Sea. It has an area of about 1.37 million ^km2 . It was named after the 16th century Dutch explorer Willem Barents. It is shallow, with an average depth of about 230 m and a maximum depth of 600 m. During the Paleogene period, it was land, and a fairly powerful river flowed on the surface. During the Ice Age, it was covered by glaciers, and later sank. These past topographical patterns remain. The sediments consist of silt, sand, or a mixture of sand and silt. Due to the influence of the North Atlantic Current, the water temperature is high on the southwest side, and is 1 to 3 °C even in February. It is developing as a fishing area.

北極海の縁海の一つ。スカンジナビア半島北岸，ロシア北西部，ノーバヤゼムリャー，フランツヨシフ諸島，スバールバル（ノルウェー領）に囲まれ，大きな入江の白海を有する。面積約 137万km²。16世紀のオランダの探検家ウィレム・バレンツにちなんで命名された。深度は浅く，平均深度約 230m，最大深度 600m。古第三紀の時代には陸地であり，かなり強力な河川が表面を流れていた。氷河時代には氷河で覆われ，のちに沈降した。そうした過去の地形パターンが残っている。堆積物はシルト，砂あるいは砂－シルトの混合からなる。北大西洋海流の影響で水温は南西側で高く，2月にも 1～3℃。漁業海域として発展しつつある。
