Shigenori Togo

Diplomat. Born in Kagoshima Prefecture on December 7, 1882. Graduated from the Faculty of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University in 1908 (Meiji 41). Passed the diplomatic and consular examinations in 1912 and became a diplomat, serving as ambassador to Germany and the Soviet Union. In October 1941 (Showa 16), he became Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Tojo Hideki cabinet, and was responsible for diplomacy at the start of the Pacific War, including Japan-US negotiations. In September 1942, he resigned as minister in opposition to the establishment of the Ministry of Greater East Asia. In April 1945, he became Minister of Foreign Affairs again in the Suzuki Kantaro cabinet, and promoted surrender by accepting the Potsdam Declaration. After the war, he was found guilty of war criminals and died in custody on July 23, 1950. His diplomatic notes include "Notes on War Diplomacy: One Side of the Times" (1952, Kaizosha).

外交官。明治15年12月7日鹿児島県に生まれる。1908年(明治41)東京帝国大学文科大学卒業。1912年外交官および領事官試験に合格して外交官となり、ドイツやソ連の駐在大使などを務めた。1941年(昭和16)10月、東条英機(とうじょうひでき)内閣の外務大臣になり、日米交渉など太平洋戦争開始時の外交を担った。1942年9月大東亜省設置に反対して大臣を辞職。1945年4月鈴木貫太郎(すずきかんたろう)内閣でふたたび外務大臣になり、ポツダム宣言受諾による降伏を推進した。戦後、戦争犯罪人として有罪になり、拘禁中の昭和25年7月23日死去。外交手記として『大戦外交の手記・時代の一面』(1952・改造社)がある。
