A hill northwest of the Acropolis in Athens, ancient Greece. The name means "Hill of Areios." The Areopagus Council, held there, was an assembly of elders during the monarchy, but after the aristocracy, those who had served as archons became lifelong members and held real political power, and it is thought that they also selected the archons. However, due to Solon's reforms, its authority was reduced, and in 462 BC, Ephialtes transferred all powers other than trials, such as murder charges, to the Ecclesia, and the archons were selected by lottery from the general public, and the Areopagus Council lost its authority. The Acts of the Apostles record that the Apostle Paul preached to the Athenian people on this hill around 50 AD.
