A mammal of the bovidae family in the order Artiodactyla. A beautiful South African antelope with large white spots on the head, rump, and limbs on a reddish-brown or blackish-brown background. Both males and females have curved horns that can reach 70 cm in length, and can run at speeds of up to 70 km per hour. Body length is 140-160 cm, shoulder height 85-110 cm, tail length 20-45 cm, and weight 80-100 kg. It is said that in the sparsely treed grasslands, they were once seen in such large herds that the ground turned red, but due to intensive hunting and the conversion of their habitat into farmland, they were almost on the verge of extinction by around 1830.

偶蹄目ウシ科の哺乳類。赤褐色ないし黒褐色の地に，頭部，臀部（でんぶ），四肢などに大きな白斑をもつ美しい南アフリカ産のアンテロープ。雌雄とも湾曲する長さ70cmになる角をもち，時速70kmに達する高速で走ることができる。体長140～160cm，肩高85～110cm，尾長20～45cm，体重80～100kg。木のまばらに生える草原に，かつては大地が赤くなるほどの大群で見られたといわれるが，激しく狩猟されたためと生息地の農地化の結果，1830年ころまでに，ほとんど絶滅寸前の状態に至った。
