Swingle classified the genus Citrus into 16 species and 8 varieties, but Chozaburo Tanaka recognized the garden species that had differentiated in various regions as species, classifying them into 159 species, about 10 times as many. R.W. Hodgson took a middle ground between the two, adding 25 species to Swingle's species, for a total of 41 species.
