...In 1971, the Japan Squash Association was founded, and athletic clubs around the country began building courts, gradually making the sport more well-known. In the 1980s, construction of courts for racquetball, which has the same origins as squash (the difference between squash and racquetball is that the game is played using the ceiling as well as the four walls), began. However, both sports had limitations, such as the high cost of building the courts and the limited number of spectators because the courts are surrounded by walls on all four sides, and so the popularity of squash was slow. However, as of 1997, the sport has grown to about 480 courts and about 260 enthusiast clubs nationwide. ...
