La grande bande (English spelling)

...It means an instrumental ensemble, but today it is mainly used to refer to an ensemble mainly composed of wind instruments, or a popular or folk ensemble (with various compositions) such as jazz. The English or French word bande originally meant a group, especially a military one, but ensembles were likened to this from the 17th century, when the French "Les vingt-quatre violons du roi," a string ensemble of 24 men, was called "La grande bande," and the band of Charles II of England, which followed this example, came to be called "The King's Private Band." In this case, it had a meaning similar to an orchestra, but in England the word band eventually came to be represented by "brass band" and "military band."
