Paintings that are painted on the ceilings of temples, palaces, etc. As an extension of wall paintings, they have been often painted since ancient times in both the East and the West. The oldest examples are found in Paleolithic cave paintings, but the most famous is Michelangelo's ceiling painting in the Sistine Chapel. In Japan, from the Azuchi-Momoyama period onwards, the ceilings of castles and temples were decorated with vivid colors or ink. Many temple ceiling paintings are ink-wash drawings of cloud dragons.
