Gordon, CH

Linear A was used from the Middle Minoan III (c. 1800 BC) to the Late Minoan I (c. 1410 BC), and 54 of the 75 symbols are the same as Linear B, but while Linear B is limited to a few areas such as Knossos and Pylos, Linear A has been excavated throughout Crete, including Knossos, Phaistos, Tylissos, Zafer Papoura, Kato Zakros, Palaikastro, Malia, and Hagia Triada, with over 150 sheets discovered at Hagia Triada. Regarding deciphering it, Semitic linguist Cyrus H. Gordon has emphasized the Semitic characteristics, and has argued that it is a Phoenician language of the West Semitic family, especially based on the inscriptions on the Hagia Triada documents and ritual implements, but this has been strongly criticized. Other theories include that it is a Hittite language, which belongs to the Indo-European language family in Asia Minor, or that it is an Anatolian Indo-European language similar to Luwian, but the total number of documents is small, less than 400 pages, and it will be difficult to decipher unless the absolute amount of documents increases.
