Year of death: June 27, 1628 (July 28, 1628) Year of birth: Tenbun 22 (1553) A senior vassal during the founding of the Edo Shogunate. Born as the son of Okubo Tadayo in Kamiwada-go, Mikawa Province (Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture). His childhood name was Senmaru, and he was commonly known as Shinjuro. In 1563, he was appointed as a personal attendant to Tokugawa Ieyasu, and participated in many battles before becoming a magistrate. In 1593, he became a chief retainer under Tokugawa Hidetada, and the following year he inherited the family headship and was given a fief of 65,000 koku in Odawara, Sagami. In 1600, he was appointed governor of Sagami, and when Hidetada became shogun in 1617, he became a senior councilor and wielded great power. In January 1619, while traveling to Kyoto, he was suddenly stripped of his title. It was said that the reason for this was that he had married his adopted daughter to Yamaguchi Shigenobu, a private marriage without the permission of Ieyasu or Hidetada, but in fact it was due to a discord with Honda Masanobu. The origin of the discord is said to be when Tadachika's retainers played a sneaky role in the attack on Ueda Castle in 1602, and Masanobu punished them. Tadachika supported Hidetada as Ieyasu's successor, while Masanobu supported Hideyasu, leading to a conflict. Another cause was the political strife between Tadachika and Masazumi, which began with the Okamoto Daihachi incident in March 1604, involving a retainer of Masanobu's son, Masazumi. Okubo Nagayasu was the judge of this case, and it is said that Baba Yazaemon reported Tadachika's treason in connection with the Okubo Nagayasu incident in 1605, and Masanobu took it up and instigated Ieyasu. Tadachika's treason was nothing more than an innocent slander, and Ieyasu believed it, and his excuses were not accepted, leading to his removal from the ranks. Tadachika represented the dissatisfaction of the fudai martial arts faction against Masanobu, which is probably why he became the target of the Honda father and son.
