…Especially noteworthy are the musicological achievements of Fétis and François Gevaert (1828-1908) in Brussels, the composing activities of Peter Benoît (1834-1901) in Antwerp, and the Liège violin school represented by Ysaïet. Musical activity in the 20th century began with composers Paul Gilson (1865-1942) and Joseph Jongen (1873-1953), who were influenced by Wagner, and has continued to progress vigorously. The Pro Arte Concert Society, founded in 1921 by Paul Collaer (1891- ), actively introduced various contemporary music from other countries, and inspired many musicians. …
