本来は木材の板の意味。他の有機質，無機質の材料を加工した板状製品を総称してボード類という。木質系には木材小片を用いるパーティクルボード，繊維板とよばれるファイバーボード，有機質系には各種プラスチックボードなどがある。無機質系の代表は石膏ボードその他の鉱物質ボード，コンクリート板，各種金属板など多様。JISでの基本サイズは90cm×180cmで，主として建築物の屋根，外壁，内壁，天井，床などに使用される。
