Stone flute

When we think of a flute, we tend to think of a transverse flute, but the word "fue" also includes instruments with a visible vibrating body, instruments held vertically, and so on, as is clear from examples such as the "sau no flute (sho)" and "sakuhachi no flute (shakuhachi)" in The Tale of Genji. Also, while most Japanese wind instruments have tubes made of bamboo, "stone flutes" and "earthen flutes" are unusual in both material and shape. Stone and earthen flutes have been excavated from prehistoric ruins, and come in a variety of shapes and with a variety of numbers of holes.
